What is a PC Cleanup?
In this case I am referring to the removal of nasty things your PC can contain like viruses, malware/spyware and other malicious programs.
Experts estimate that the Mydoom worm infected in the region of a quarter-million computers during a single day in January 2004. Back in March 1999, the Melissa virus was so dominant that it forced Microsoft and many other very large companies to totally turn off their e-mail systems until the virus could be contained. The ILOVEYOU virus in 2000 had an equally shocking effect. In January 2007, a worm called Storm appeared -- by October, experts believed around 50 million computers were infected.
What do computer viruses do?
Some viruses are programmed purposely to damage the data on your computer by corrupting programs, deleting files, or even erasing your entire hard drive!
Many viruses do nothing more than display a message or make sounds / verbal comments at a certain time or a programming event after replicating themselves to be picked up by other users one way or another.
Other viruses make your computer's system perform unpredictably or crash frequently. Sadly many people who have problems or frequent crashes using their computers do not recognize that they have a virus and live with the inconveniences
What about Spyware/Malware?
Malware, comes from the words malicious and software, is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's permission. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code.
The term "computer virus" is sometimes used as a catch-all phrase to include all types of malware, including true viruses.
Software is considered malware based on the apparent intent of the creator rather than any particular features. Malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, most rootkits, spyware, dishonest adware, crimeware and other malicious and unwanted software.
How did your PC get them?
Viruses and Malware is generally spread by attachments in e-mail messages or via instant messaging messages. That is why it is important that you never open e-mail attachments unless you know who it's from and you are expecting it, even then a friend may inadvertently send you something they believe is clean but may contain a virus or malware.
Viruses can be camouflaged as attachments of funny images, greeting cards, or audio and video files.
Viruses and Malware also spread through downloading files from the Internet. They can be hidden in illicit software or other files or programs you may download.
